Financial Help for Students
The CHANCE office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
New freshmen (high school seniors or students who have not attended college since graduating from high school) may start the application process. The procedures are listed below.
Here's what we require:
Note: To be considered for admission to NIU through the CHANCE Program, all materials—including test scores—must be received by your application deadline April 30th 2016.
We require you to submit your official secondary/high school transcript(s) before the application deadline. This should be sent by your school online or can be mailed.
Applications must be submitted with the application fee in order to be considered. Submitting the application and the online fee or fee waiver begins the admission process and should be done as soon as possible to avoid delays. More information can be found at this link. http://www.niu.edu/admissions/apply/index.shtml
How to be admitted
Applicants may be admitted one of three ways:
Preferred Profile of Admitted Student
Students who meet the following requirements will be considered for automatic admission:
Review of Applicants
If an applicant does not meet the preferred profile of an admitted student, further consideration will be determined by the CHANCE staff once all required application documents have been submitted
Alternative Admission Decisions
Each year, the CHANCE Program receives over 4700+ applications for its freshman class, which means there are more applicants than can be admitted.
If NIU is unable to offer an applicant full admission, they may pursue the following option:
Transferring to NIU through CHANCE in the spring semester
Applicants must have a minimum of 13 and no more than 23 transferrable college credit hours from an accredited institution.
Notification of Decision
Admission decisions are made throughout the application period. Students may check MyNIU for admission decision updates.
Tracking Your Application Status
After submitting your application you will receive an email with your identification number and with instructions on how to access information about your admission to NIU. To ensure all documents have been received:
Frequently Asked Questions
As an applicant going through holistic review, what is the likelihood that I will get admitted?
All admissions decision students are based on students’ high school grades, ACT scores, personal statement, math admissions test scores, and recommendations (optional).
If I haven't received a decision by now does it mean I am getting denied?
No; due to the increasing number of students who qualify for admission to NIU, we must closely monitor our class size to determine how many students from holistic review may be admitted and when. The goal is for the majority of students applying for the fall semester to receive a decision by May.
Can I send new information to help with the decision making process?
Yes, we will only consider documents that were received by the admission deadline. This includes updated transcripts reflecting a new class rank.
I applied in August but I have been told that my credentials are still being reviewed, does this mean there is a problem?
No, students will remain "in review" until an admission decision is made. The goal is for all students applying for the fall semester to receive a decision by the end of May.
